NC SAVAN Coverage in Nash
North Carolina Statewide Automated Victim Assistance and Notification, or NC SAVAN, uses VINE/VINELink. NCDAC says the service links all North Carolina jails and Adult Correction. Its scope includes county jail inmates, state prisoners, probationers, and parolees. The state search directory also describes registered sex-offender information. Custody status and registration are free, and the automated phone service is available around the clock.
For Nash County, that creates a bridge between the Nash County Detention Facility and state custody or supervision. It does not merge their records. A jail departure can be a direct release, an NCDAC transfer, or a move to another authority. The event shown in VINELink belongs to the agency feeding it. If the person moves, identify the new agency and register against the destination record when instructed.
The official NC SAVAN operational instructions document the local service:
Those instructions are the authority for coverage and alerts, while the live matching record controls a person’s displayed status.
Search a Nash Inmate on VINELink
Use VINELink for one named person, not as a rolling Nash County release list. A custody or offender ID is the best search key because names can be shared or entered in more than one form. If only a name is known, compare every identifier and the supplying agency. Do not assume the first similar result is the right person.
- Open VINELink and choose North Carolina. Select the person or offender search.
- Enter the full legal name or a known jail, custody, or NCDAC offender identifier. Try verified name forms if the first search does not resolve a match.
- Review all matches. Compare the person’s identifying details, record number, custody agency, facility, and current status.
- Open the correct record. Read the stated event and agency before treating “released” or “transferred” as the answer.
- Save the relevant custody ID. If the record shows a transfer, follow the destination and register on each applicable record.
A no-result search is weak evidence. Spelling, a data delay, excluded facilities, and a never-booked release can all cause an absence. For a broader named-person workflow, use the Nash County released-inmate search to pair SAVAN with Sheriff and court records.
Note: A unique custody number reduces same-name errors, but the agency and current status still need to match.
Nash VINELink Release Fields
A VINELink match shows identifying and current status information sent by the participating jail, NCDAC, supervision, or registry source. The exact fields vary. The update may support that the matched person changed out of a listed custody status, but VINELink has no published promise of a permanent Nash County release archive. Save the agency, event wording, record ID, and update context when the event matters.
| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Name and identifiers | Help distinguish the intended person from people with similar names. |
| Custody or offender ID | Links the alert and event to the participating agency’s record. |
| Agency or facility | Identifies which jail, prison, or supervision source supplied the status. |
| Current status | Reports custody, release, transfer, or another supplied status for that source. |
| Event information | Describes the reported change; availability and detail depend on the record. |
| Update context | Helps place the event in time but does not guarantee immediate delivery. |
A released result supports departure from that agency. It does not rule out another warrant, supervision, or a transfer to another sovereign. For durable proof of a Nash jail event, request the Sheriff’s entry and release summary. For a state-prison event, use NCDAC incarceration history and actual release information.
The Sheriff record can include the actual release time, authority, disposition, and destination if those fields exist for the booking. Ask for the entry/release summary rather than asking the office to build a new report. A court order can explain the legal basis, yet it may not show the minute the jail carried it out. VINELink adds the custody-change signal; the jail and court records explain the event.
Register for Nash Release Alerts
Anyone may check custody information and register anonymously for custody changes. Court-event alerts have separate eligibility rules for qualifying victims and involve the district attorney. The methods offered for a custody record may include phone, text, email, TTY, or an app option. Use only the channels shown for that match.
- Open the correct person record and choose Register or Get Notifications.
- Select each phone, text, email, TTY, or other method that the record offers.
- Enter and verify the contact details. If phone notification is chosen, create a confidential four-digit PIN.
- Confirm and save the registration. Keep the custody ID and PIN private.
- Register on each relevant record if separate Nash jail and NCDAC identifiers exist.
The PIN acknowledges a call and stops repeated calls. When SAVAN calls, listen to the notice and enter the PIN. If the PIN is forgotten, call 1-877-627-2826 and press 0. More than one phone number or email may be registered, which can help if one channel is unavailable.
Registration should follow the exact person record. Do not place private contact details or the PIN in a shared court file, public message, or search note. If the person moves from Nash County jail to NCDAC and receives a different identifier, the first registration may not follow every later event. Save both identifiers and confirm that the new record has its own alert registration.
Nash SAVAN Call Timing
Normal SAVAN calls generally occur from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. If unanswered, they repeat every two hours for 24 hours. Critical release, escape, and capture notices can arrive at any time. Unacknowledged critical calls repeat every 30 minutes for 24 hours. Email is sent once and may arrive at any time.
Delivery time and record time are not the same. A jail or NCDAC first reports an event, SAVAN receives it, and the chosen channel then carries the notice. Keep contact information current and do not silence the service if an alert is expected. Even so, NCDAC warns that NC SAVAN is a supplement, not the sole basis for a safety plan or release confirmation.
Note: Entering the confidential phone PIN confirms receipt; it does not change or validate the agency’s custody record.
Nash VINELink Coverage Gaps
NC SAVAN does not monitor police precinct or local police holding facilities, juvenile facilities, or mental facilities. It may also miss someone who bonds out at the magistrate level without being booked. A person may therefore have been arrested while no SAVAN record exists. Confirm whether the person reached the Nash County Detention Facility before treating the absence as meaningful.
Federal custody is outside VINELink. If a Nash County event may have led to federal prison, use the BOP Inmate Locator. If it may have led to immigration custody, use the ICE locator. Neither source replaces the Nash jail release record, and a result from one system says nothing conclusive about custody in another.
Police holds are another local gap. NC SAVAN says it does not monitor precinct or local police facilities. Ask the arresting agency whether the person was transferred to the Nash County Detention Facility. A bond-out handled at the magistrate level before booking may never create the SAVAN event a caller expects. That is a coverage limit, not proof that the reported arrest did not occur.
Nash Release Versus Transfer Alerts
The status wording must be read with the agency name. “Released” from Nash County Detention Facility may mean a community departure, but the underlying disposition can also show transfer. A transfer notice means that the person left one location and entered another process. Follow the destination rather than closing the search.
If Nash reports a move to NCDAC, use the state offender search and compare the state offender number, active location, incarceration history, and supervision history. NCDAC expressly excludes county jail data, so it will not explain every Nash jail departure. If the person left state prison, an actual release event is stronger than a prior projected date.
A strong confirmation pairs records. For county release, combine the Sheriff entry/release summary with the court order. For state release, pair NCDAC actual release history with supervision status. VINELink adds timely notification, but the source record supplies the durable detail.
When a transfer destination is not clear, call the Nash County Detention Facility with the person’s full identity and jail ID if known. Ask whether the booking ended through community release or transfer and request the receiving agency. Then search only that system. This sequence avoids treating a name that vanished from one custody source as proof that all custody ended.
Nash Registry Is Not VINELink
The North Carolina Sex Offender Registry is a separate source. It provides public registration and address status for a person who has a legal registration duty. It is not a Nash County release list, and it does not cover every person who leaves jail or prison.
Absence from the registry says nothing about release when the person has no duty to register. Likewise, a registry entry does not by itself establish current jail custody. Use the registry only for its stated status question and use its maintaining agency for corrections. For release or transfer alerts, stay with the matching NC SAVAN custody record.
Keep the two identifiers separate when the same person appears in both systems. Registry data concerns a statutory registration duty and reported address status. A Nash VINELink record concerns the custody or supervision event sent by a participating agency. Checking one source cannot substitute for checking the other question, and neither replaces the Sheriff release summary when the exact Nash jail departure is at issue.
